Daring Greatly by Brené Brown - Why This Book Started Our Book Club in Carlisle

Ben Hickman from Reflective Rebels

"It's been two years this month since I first read Brené Brown's Daring Greatly. I believe a good book has the power to change our lives, and this one has certainly impacted mine.

Its fundamental message is that vulnerability is a strength. It's necessary to connect, to live fully, to love and find joy. More than this, understanding how our boldness (or lack of it) is deeply connected to our fear of feeling shame has unlocked my courage.

Don't get me wrong - the things I've done since have been scary. Launching this book club, rebranding to Reflective Rebels, posting my money worries for all of LinkedIn to see - these have been vulnerable leaps that I've made, despite the fear.

This book didn't just change how I think. It changed what I do. And it's why Reflective Rebels Book Club exists."

Why We Read It

Daring Greatly explores the power of vulnerability in leadership, relationships, and life. Brown's research challenges the idea that vulnerability is weakness, showing instead that it's the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.

For our book club, this was foundational. We wanted to create a space where people could show up honestly - messy, uncertain, human. This book gave us permission to do exactly that.
